Work Hours: Full Time Schedule - 40 hours/week
The U.S. Embassy in Bujumbura is seeking an individual for the position of Electrician in the Facility
Management Section. All ordinarily resident (OR) applicants must have the required work and/or
residency permits to be eligible for consideration.

BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION

Performs full range of electrical services: installs, maintains and repairs electrical systems, machinery,
fixtures, appliances, and non-secure telephone lines, for all USG owned and leased properties. Works under
the direction and supervision of maintenance supervisor.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES % OF TIME

Repairs and maintains electrical appliances and machinery, including household stoves, generators, and
industrial equipment used in GSO workshops. 30%
Installs electrical appliances, lights, and devices in homes, offices, and household gardens. 25%
Repairs malfunctioning circuits and wiring in buildings. 20%
Designs and installs electrical systems for office buildings and workshops. 15%
Performs other tasks as assigned. 10%

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

a. Education: Completion of technical school in electrical courses or certification from a professional
electrician’s school is required.
b. Prior Work Experience: At least four years of experience as an electrician is required.
c. Post Entry Training: N/A
d. Language Proficiency: Level II English ability is required. Level III French and either Swahili or
Kirundi required.
e. Knowledge: Basic electrical repair; knowledge of circuits, electrical motors, and installations .
f. Skills and Abilities: Skills in use of voltmeter; ability to balance electrical phases, repair machinery
and identify electrical problems. Ability to work from blueprints or schematic drawings as necessary.


POSITION ELEMENTS
a. Supervision Received: Receives direct supervision from Maintenance Foreman, general supervision from Maintenance Supervisor.
b. Available Guidelines: Established trade practices.
c. Exercise of Judgment: Choice and placement of materials.
d. Authority to Make Commitments: N/A
e. Nature, Level and Purpose of Contacts: Primarily limited to in-house contacts for purpose of installing or repairing items. Some outside contacts required in order to select (with Purchasing Agent) appropriate materials.
f. Supervision Exercised: Supervision work of semi-skilled assistants.
g. Time Required to Perform Full Range of Duties after Entry into the Position: Six months.

SELECTION PROCESS

When fully qualified, US Citizen Eligible Family Members (USEFMs) and US Veterans are given preference. Therefore, it is essential that the candidate specifically address the required qualifications above in the application.

1. Management will consider nepotism/conflict of interest, budget, and residency status in determining successful candidacy.
2. Current employees serving a probationary period are not eligible to apply.
3. Current Ordinarily Resident employees with an Overall Summary Rating of Needs Improvement or Unsatisfactory on their most recent Employee Performance Report are not eligible to apply.
4. Currently employed US Citizen EFMs who hold a Family Member Appointment (FMA) are ineligible to apply for advertised positions within the first 90 calendar days of their employment.
5. Currently employed NORs hired under a Personal Services Agreement (PSA) are ineligible to apply for advertised positions within the first 90 calendar days of their employment unless currently hired into a position with a When Actually Employed (WAE) work schedule.
